Each membership plan is categorised as either a New Member & Renewal plan (for all members) or a Renewal plan (for existing members only).

This allows you to serve up different membership options depending on whether a member is joining for the first time or a previous members renewing.

New Member & Renewal plans

As default, all of your membership plans will be configured as New Member & Renewal plans. So if you offer online memberships, these membership plans will be served up as options when someone clicks on the 'Start a New Membership' tab or 'Start another membership' link. They will also be served up as Renewal options during the renewal window.

Renewal Plans

Renewal plans allow you to configure a membership plan so that it is only available to existing members. New members will not be able to purchase a renewal plan.

You can also specify which plans are available to renew based on the current plan that the member holds. For example, if you have an exclusive membership type that only certain members can buy, then you can specify that only members who currently hold that membership type will be able to buy it when they renew.
